Whirlpool Corporation, the number one major appliance manufacturer in the world, has been recognized for its commitment to sustainability and natural resource efficiency with its inclusion on the 2017 Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index.
Whirlpool Corporation has made numerous strides in sustainability since opening a corporate office for environmental control in 1970. In a partnership with Purdue University, Whirlpool Corporation has pioneered a project to retrofit an existing home to achieve net zero water, waste and energy with the ReNEWW House project. And from installing wind turbines to help power its manufacturing facility in Findlay, Ohio, to creating the Zera™ Food Recycler from WLabs of Whirlpool Corporation–an in-home food recycler designed to help combat food waste–the company is not just talking the talk, but walking the walk.
“We’re honored to be included on this list for yet another year,” said Ron Voglewede, director of global sustainability. “Whirlpool Corporation has made major strides and adopted new sustainable practices both in the creation and operation of its reliable appliances, as well as in meeting goals ahead of schedule to increase the efficiency of our business practices. We’re excited to continue this momentum in the years to come.”
In its recently released 2016 Sustainability Report, Whirlpool Corporation announced that it exceeded its objectives to reduce both energy and water intensity from manufacturing by 15 percent between 2014 and 2020. These goals were two of four goals that Whirlpool Corporation set or reaffirmed in 2014. The remaining sustainability objectives include: achieving full material transparency on 90 percent of all new parts by 2020, and eliminating manufacturing waste that would otherwise be taken to landfills by 2022.
