Social Responsibility in North America

House + Home

We believe the four walls around us have the power to unlock immense opportunity for the people who dwell within. A comfortable, nurturing place to live enabling healthy choices, is essential for everyone as the first step in their journey towards a better life. That’s why Whirlpool Corporation gives purposefully of our time, funds, and products to the communities where we live and work, with partners like Habitat for Humanity. Because everyone deserves a house to live well and find comfort in.

What makes a house truly special lies in the personal touches; the gathering spaces for friends and family; the feeling of security knowing you have a place to call your own. And, a house provides the blueprint for success in life: where you prepare for work, study after school, raise children in, care for aging parents and conjure dazzling plans for the future. That’s why we invest in initiatives that support people at all steps in the journey of life, and the communities around them. Because vibrant, participatory communities play an important role in improving life at home.

To Whirlpool, a home is so much bigger than a house itself. It is the place where people of all ages connect; children are mentored and coached; open space and gardens grow, small businesses bustle, and stable neighborhoods that offer the employment and quality of life amenities that are the bedrock of inclusive communities thrive together.

Whirlpool is proud to work with our employees, their loved ones, and our communities to help make sure everyone has a house to dare to dream in that’s part of a resilient, flourishing and sustainable village, district or dale that they feel proud to call home. So we can all wake up to a brighter tomorrow, together.

Care Counts™ Laundry Program

Care Counts™ Laundry ProgramAccording to teachers nationwide, 1 in 5 students struggle with access to clean clothes.* The stigma and shame of not having clean clothes can lead students to miss school, and students who miss school are seven times more likely to drop out. The Care Counts™ laundry program by Whirlpool brand is committed to helping remove one small but important barrier to attendance – access to clean clothes – by installing washers and dryers in schools. Now in its fifth year, the Care Counts™ laundry program has grown to support students in need across 18 cities and 82 schools around the country – providing access to clean clothes for more than 38,000 students. In 2019, Whirlpool brand also launched a national program, offering a limited amount of laundry pairs to qualifying elementary schools. This expansion will allow Whirlpool to more quickly scale Care Counts™ laundry program moving forward, with expectations that an additional 100 schools will be enrolled in 2020.

To complement the launch of the expansion program in Fall of 2019, Whirlpool brand hosted events in Chicago and New York where researchers, educators and the general population learned about the Care Counts™ laundry program and its impact to date. Attendees were able to become involved in the program by assembling “Care Kits” of laundry supplies that were then donated to participating schools. The events garnered media coverage in outlets like CBS Chicago and Yahoo! News.

* Based on a survey conducted by phone within the United States by Braun Research from April 25 – May 8, 2019 among 600 public school teachers (18 years or older).

Harbor Shores

Harbor ShoresThroughout most of the 20th century the area now known as Harbor Shores was a center for manufacturing, serving as the economic hub of the region and neighbor of Whirlpool Corporation headquarters. In the mid-1980’s, during a severe economic downturn that devastated manufacturing in the Midwest, more than 6,000 jobs were lost in an 18-month period. The land became littered with dilapidated buildings and served as a dumping ground for old sludge and other waste.

Through the work of Whirlpool Foundation and various community groups, it was determined a golf course and residential community could bring dollars back into the area. Over 3 million square feet of dilapidated buildings were demolished and over 150,000 tons of waste material was removed from various sites on the property. This is equivalent to a football field 70 feet high.

Harbor Shores is now a not-for-profit development with a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, residential development and 12 miles of walking trails. Truly a unique development, Harbor Shores is also a proud partner of The First Tee of Benton Harbor, an organization that promotes character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf.

Whirlpool Foundation

Social Responsibility in North America 13

Whirlpool FoundationMore than half a century ago, Louis and Frederick Upton, two of Whirlpool Corporation’s founders, established Whirlpool Foundation and made a commitment – a promise – to reinvest in the community. Their intent was to provide financial leadership support for nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life in the communities where Whirlpool operated.

Whirlpool Foundation will keep that decades-old promise, using new and innovative ways to make lasting impact on society, with an emphasis on our home communities.

In addition of our formal programs, Whirlpool Foundation will focus on addressing community issues through partnerships and collaboration to better leverage resources and broaden the impact of change and improvement.
