Today, Whirlpool Corporation’s Integrated Supply Chain organization was named a recipient of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay® Excellence Award for a fourth consecutive year. This honor is the EPA’s highest recognition for demonstrated leadership in freight supply-chain energy and environmental performance, recognizing a select group of the EPA’s more than 3,700 top freight supply-chain partners. Whirlpool Corporation was recognized in the large shipper category, which represents companies that move products more than 500 million miles annually.
Whirlpool Corporation was also named an EPA SmartWay High Performer in the Shipper category. A distinction in its second year, the High Performer title is reserved for SmartWay partners with top-ranked performance in efficiency and/or air quality performance.
“This award is the culmination of efforts made by Whirlpool Corporation to drive impactful results in the sustainability category,” said Amanda Tolhurst, director, U.S. Logistics. “To be recognized four years in a row is encouraging, as it shows we have made meaningful progress toward reducing our carbon footprint and making improvements within our supply chain that benefit the environment.”
Whirlpool Corporation was formally recognized for its efforts on Oct. 1 during the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals’ 2018 EDGE Supply Chain Conference and Exhibition in Nashville, Tenn. Other honorees at the ceremony represented a broad range of businesses including retail trade, manufacturers, and food producers.
“Since 2004, the EPA, through its SmartWay Partnership, has collaborated with business to improve the sustainability of goods movement,” said Assistant Administrator of the Office of Air and Radiation, Bill Wehrum. “Today, we are recognizing top-performing SmartWay Shippers and 3rd Party Logistics providers with a 2018 SmartWay Excellence Award. These industry leaders serve as role models for their peers, contributing to healthier air by advancing strategies and practices that result in cleaner, more efficient freight supply chains.”
The EPA SmartWay program, which first launched in 2004, is dedicated to helping companies advance supply chain sustainability by tracking and improving clean, efficient freight transportation. Whirlpool Corporation currently requires its contracted carriers to be registered with SmartWay, with 99.58% of North American shipments moved annually by SmartWay carriers.
