Integrated Supply Chain (ISC) honored as environmental-friendly shipper; semi-finalist for 2017 EPA SmartWay Award
Make it four in a row for the Integrated Supply Chain!
That’s four consecutive years the ISC has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a top environmental-friendly shipper, which also qualifies the ISC as a semi-finalist for the EPA’s 2017 SmartWay Excellence Award.
The SmartWay Excellence Awards recognize supply-chain efficiency in organizations that have improved environmental performance of their freight-management operations. The EPA identified the ISC based on a quantitative assessment of our environmental performance and exclusive use of SmartWay carriers to move our freight. SmartWay carriers are those that reduce transportation-related emissions that affect climate change and reduce environmental risk by using the latest technology within the trucking industry to improve fuel economy.
“We are very honored to receive this recognition, even for the fourth time,” said Jim Thompson, senior manager, Transportation. “It’s not something we take for granted, and we’re pleased the EPA has again recognized our leadership in this space. We work hard to Deliver the Promise every day to all our stakeholders, and are committed to reducing environmental risk every way we can.”
Whirlpool Corporation requires contracted carriers to be SmartWay certified. Currently, 99.72 percent of North American shipments are moved with SmartWay carriers. Last year, we reduced diesel fuel consumption by 1.4 million gallons through improved miles-per-gallon, which equated to a reduction of 14,654 metric tons of CO2 emission. In addition, we reduced total fuel consumption in 2015 by more than 108,000 gallons by increasing rail use. This ultimately reduced over 1,100 metric tons of CO2 emissions for the year.
As part of the award process, Thompson said the ISC’s Logistics team is required to provide additional qualitative documentation by the end of this month that demonstrates our support for SmartWay’s environmental goals. If selected as a SmartWay Excellence Award winner in 2017, it would be the third consecutive year the ISC will receive the award.
The SmartWay Excellence Award winners for 2017 will be announced by the EPA in September.
