The Whirlpool Corporation Global Information Systems (GIS) team members in the Twin Cities showed up in a big way on May 12th. Over 70 GIS volunteers participated in a Community Outreach Day, contributing more than 500 hours of service to local non-profit organizations.
Bright and early on Friday morning, a crew of GIS volunteers arrived at several Habitat for Humanity houses in the area. They helped with outside maintenance, ranging from lawn mowing to power washing. Volunteer Nicole Jackson commented, “Getting out and serving the needs of our community in a practical way really helped put things into perspective for me. Habitat is striving to not only fulfill basic needs of our local families, but to give them a hand up by building relationships and life skills. I am humbled to have the opportunity to partner with them in their mission.”
Hospice at Home also needed some assistance with spring landscaping at their facilities in Stevensville and St. Joseph. GIS volunteers spent the day removing weeds and spreading mulch at both locations.
MOSAIC, a local community development organization, needed help getting ready for their move to a new location in Benton Harbor. Volunteers helped prepare the new space by painting several rooms.
Silvana Viegas-Boyle, Jan Moore and John Memsic coordinated the day’s volunteer activities. According to Silvana, “It was hard, rewarding work and the gratitude on the faces of those we helped made it all the more worthwhile.” She added, “I am proud of how much we accomplished for these three entities that make such a difference in the lives of so many in our community. As our sore muscles, blisters and sun burns heal, we can look back and be sure it was all for a great cause.”
