For the 6th National Day Against Food Waste, Whirlpool EMEA is launching the 3rd edition of Moments not to be Wasted, a project that aims to contribute to the fight against food waste through a captivating educational and informative project in schools. In 2019 the company further intensified its commitment on this issue by participating in Zero Waste, a European awareness campaign for sustainable consumption conceived by Last Minute Market, the association promoting the National Day Against Food Waste, in partnership with the Italian Ministry of Environment.
Compared to 2018, the parties involved almost doubled: more than 1 million people among students, teachers and families, from 1,600 primary schools from Italy, Poland and Slovakia will take part in this edition; these impressive numbers demonstrate the success and increased awareness towards one of the most crucial issues for our planet’s future development.
While the previous editions involved the communities of the Italian regions where Whirlpool operates – Lombardy, Tuscany, Marche and Campania – this year, for the first time, the project will cover all of Italy.
For the second year in a row, the initiative will step outside the Italian borders and involve students, teachers and families in Warsaw, Radomsko, Łódź, Wroclaw in Poland, and in Poprad, in Slovakia, where the company has both commercial and industrial operations. By the end of the year, the initiative will also involve primary schools in the UK, thereby further expanding its geographic scope in Europe.
“As stated in the Sustainable Development Goals contained in the 2030 UN agenda, today more than ever the responsible use of resources represents an important crossroad for the future of our planet. As a global leader, we have a duty to contribute to this challenge, which is why we consider the fight against food waste as a priority both in our social responsibility and sustainability strategy as well as in our product innovations.” – stated Karim Bruneo, Corporate Responsibility and Government Relations Manager, Whirlpool EMEA – “I’m proud to announce the start of the third edition of Moments not to be Wasted, a steadily growing project in different European countries that has quickly become a point of reference to raise awareness on responsible and sustainable consumption”.
As part of the initiative, Whirlpool EMEA will also make a donation to Banco Alimentare to support the Organization’s projects concerning the collection and redistribution of food surplus to charitable organizations.
“We are glad that Whirlpool involved us in the project Moments Not To Be Wasted because we have always believed in the importance of creating awareness-raising actions to involve teachers, children and their families to educate them on value of food, the fight against food waste and its importance for people, local community and our planet.” – stated Giuseppe Parma, General Director Banco Alimentare Foundation Onlus– “This commitment to education is the fulfillment of our daily mission that sees us committed to food recovery and its distribution to people in need.”
To make the participation in the project even more effective and stimulating, the students will be involved in a real educational contest, in which they can express their ideas on sustainability through photos, videos and drawings, both in analogic and digital form.
All the schools taking part in the program will receive an educational kit, which this year will have a brand new graphic design that is even more attractive. In addition to guidelines for teachers, participants will find in the kit specific materials designed to stimulate students’ creativity and get them thinking about anti-waste issues.
