Whirlpool Corporation has conducted business with integrity and given back to the communities in which the company operates since our founding in 1911, long before the environment became a focus of business and society. Here is a snapshot of Whirlpool Corporation’s key milestones:
1970 Established the corporate office for environmental control
1975 Led in crafting the Energy Policy and Conservation Act
1979 Helped craft U.S. Federal Trade Commission Energy Labeling Rules and every appliance efficiency standard and test procedure in the United States since the late 1970s
1996 Honored as founding member of the Business Environment Leadership Council, an advisory group to the Pew Center on Global Climate Change; Helped develop the Green Lights Program, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) precursor to the ENERGY STAR® program
1998 Collaborated with the European Authorities to draft the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, which requires the proper recycling of appliances according to the European and national requirements. Whirlpool products already widely met the 2008 recycling and recovery targets required by the WEEE Directive
2003 Became the world’s first appliance manufacturer to announce a global greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction target; the company’s goal was a 3 percent reduction from 1998 levels by 2008
2004 Reached goal where Whirlpool Corporation's release of toxic chemicals in the United States was nearly 90 percent less than the releases compared to the 1987 baseline year, while at the same time production increased approximately 80 percent
2007 Announced a revised GHG reduction target of 6.6 percent by 2012
